Because you should. These are experienced professionals who have legitimate reasons for hesitation. Your job is to create conditions where adoption makes sense to them on their own terms.

Tactic 1: Structured Pairing Sessions

The single most effective thing you can do is pair an adopter with a skeptic on a real task. Not a demo. Not a training exercise. Real work that needs to get done.

Pick a task that is well-suited for AI assistance: generating tests for an existing module, creating boilerplate for a new service, or writing migration scripts. The task should be meaningful enough that the skeptic cares about the outcome, but not so critical that any hiccups create stress.

In a code review: “This is a nice example of AI-assisted scaffolding. The structure follows our patterns cleanly.”

What Celebration Does Not Look Like

Do not make a big production out of it. No all-hands announcements. No “AI adopter of the month” awards. Experienced developers find this patronizing. They did not discover fire. They used a tool effectively. Treat it with proportionate acknowledgment.

Do not celebrate the tool. Celebrate the developer’s judgment in using it well. “Maria’s test suite was thorough” is better than “the AI tool generated great tests.” The former reinforces the developer’s agency. The latter credits the tool and implicitly diminishes the developer’s role.

Tactic 4: Removing Friction
